Taylor Swift's latest album, "The Life of a Showgirl," has broken a record by achieving 3.5 million equivalent album units since its release on Friday, Billboard reported citing Luminate figures on Wednesday. However, critics claim Swift has released too many "exclusive" versions of the album to reach this milestone.

KEY FACTS

  • According to Billboard, Swift's album surpassed Adele’s 10-year-old consumption record for “25” within just five days of its release, and the numbers are expected to keep increasing.

  • This achievement comes amid criticism from some fans who claim Swift has used the “Life of a Showgirl” album release to aggressively pursue industry records. She partnered with tech giants Apple and Google for promotion and unveiled more than two dozen “exclusive” versions of the same album.

  • The album initially had 23 different physical and digital versions, featuring various album art and exclusives like poems, voice memos, and acoustic tracks, with the number rising to nearly 30 by Wednesday.

  • Some versions were available only for a limited period—"The Life of a Showgirl (DELUXE Alone In My Tower Acoustic Version)" was on iTunes for just 24 hours—and others were exclusive to specific retailers (two were only on iTunes, while several CDs and one vinyl edition were exclusive to Target).

  • Some critics have objected to the artist, arguing that she promotes overconsumption and exploits her supporters.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

Another record poised to fall. Adele continues to hold the record for actual album sales—excluding streaming or other consumption methods—but according to Billboard, Swift is just 180,000 album sales away from breaking that record (3.378 million) and is likely to surpass it by the end of the week. Billboard is expected to announce first-week numbers for “The Life of a Showgirl” on Sunday, along with its anticipated debut on the Billboard 200 chart.

BIG NUMBER

2.6 million. That's the number of album units Swift's previous album, "The Tortured Poets Department," achieved in its first week, setting a then-record for the artist.

WHAT IS AN EQUIVALENT ALBUM UNIT?

According to Billboard, one equivalent album unit equates to one album sale, or 10 individual tracks sold from an album, or 3,750 ad-supported or 1,250 paid/subscription official audio and video streams generated by songs from an album. (Currently, none of the tracks from “The Life of a Showgirl” are available for individual purchase, so there are no track sales contributing to its total sales).

KEY BACKGROUND

“The Life of a Showgirl” marks Swift’s 12th studio album. She announced the album in August and revealed more details, including its title, during an appearance on “New Heights,” the sports podcast co-hosted by her now-fiancé Travis Kelce. The album features 12 tracks and was described by the New York Times as Swift's "conscious return to straight-up pop music.” The album’s lead track, “The Fate of Ophelia,” is currently the most-streamed song from the record on Spotify, with 85.3 million listens as of Wednesday afternoon.
